The Importance of Appropriating Children's Literature

In this section the author has described four reasons why Children’s literature is appropriate in class according to Hismanoglu. Children’s literature is valuable and authentic material, children’s literature has highly cultural enrichment, language enrichment and personal involvement.

A.   Valuable Authentic Material

Leni Marlina emphasizes that children’s literature are not created for the primary purposes of teaching a language. But in the other side, when secondary students read children’s literature they will familiar with many different linguistic forms, communicative functions and meanings.

1. Motivating Material


Children’s literature also can be motivating material for students. Through Children’s literature, students will know how the writer and characters solve the problem with their way. It’s really interesting and can be a motivation for students. Leni Marlina explains Children’s literature can be stimulus to increase the learners’ participation in EFL classroom language learning activities.

2. Cultural Enrichment

Children’s literature provides many cultural items on its story. It can help students to learn other country’s culture through children’s literature. In other side, it also can help students to communicate with other people in many countries.

3. Language Enrichment


Children’s literature provides many simple and new words that easy to understand for secondary students. It can help students to increase their vocabulary that can enrich their writing and speaking skills. Children’s literature also provides students with simple grammar. It also can help them to understand basic grammar.

4. Personal Involvement

Children’s literature also can help students to involve their self in learning. When reading children’s literature, students will become drawn to a story. Children’s literature also provides many problems that can be a discussion material in the class. Students will become enthusiastic to solve that problem. It can make learning more fun and attractive.


B. Students’ Language Skills Empowerment

Children’s literature can help students to gain language skills such as reading, writing, speaking and listening. In children’s literature, students will read the story in easy way because it provides easy vocabulary and simple grammar. According to Leni Marlina, when students read children’s literature, they raise questions, recognize problems and look for causes and solutions, reflect on ideas and make connections. For that reason, literature encourages students to talk, thus developing their listening ad speaking skills.


C. Areas of Empowerment in Students’ Language

According to Martin, Children’s literature shows certain characteristics, such as simple vocabulary but creatively-built, vocabulary that used in daily interaction and rhythmical vocabulary. Through those characteristics, students can improve their vocabulary in English.


D. Student’s Critical Thinking Empowerment

Students will become critical thinker when they try to solve the problem in the story. Problem in Children’s literature can be effectively used for discussing and sharing feelings or opinion. Through Children’s literature, students both learn an English language and engage their mind critically.


According to this section, English Children’s literature has many advantages that can improve students language in English. Therefore, using English Children’s Literature, students will learn English more fun and attractive.
