The Types of Children's Literature Which Can Be Used in Teaching English at Secondary School

In this section, Leni Marlina has described kind of Children’s literature which can help students to learn English. She states that the most suitable book for secondary students is the books written for children. She also explains that pictures book can be enjoy for secondary students who have different level of ability and proficiency.

There are many kind of children’s literature. But, Marlina says that short story is one of the perfect read for secondary students. Short story is really helpful to improve students’ vocabulary and reading. Short stories also can be enjoying for all students in each level of learning. Marlina concludes that short stories can be powerful and motivating source for teaching both speaking and listening.

In this section, Marlina also discuss two kinds of short stories as literary texts which can be used in EFL classroom.

1. Folktales

Marlina says folktales can provide short and simple structure and can be a source of moral values, a kind of religion, philosophy, and science. Folktales also can attract all age reader’s interest.

There are many kinds of folktales, including fables, myths, folktales about journey, tales of peace and war, geographical studies through folktales, topography tales, and many more.

2. Short Fiction

There are many genres of fiction that can be used for EFL learning, such as science fiction, crime story, love story and realistic story.

According to Marlina, those 2 kinds of Children’s literature can assist us to teach EFL for secondary students. They are having simple structures and provide many vocabularies that can improve students English.
